The ruins of Lamanai, Belize

Category: Belize, Central America, Cool Stuff

Up river in northern Belize are the Mayan ruins of Lamanai. Our cruise ship entered port and we were shortly on a bus headed to New River. About 45 minutes later we were on speed boats headed for the ancient
remnants of a lost civilization.

Along the river our captain stopped to show us all the wildlife along the way including birds, bats and alligators. It is a nice relaxing trip just bring a lot of suntan lotion and hat to shield yourself from the sun.

Most of the site was unexcavated until the 1970s, and there is still much of the temples covered in earth or dense jungle growth. The temples that have been excavated are magnificent though. You can even climb to the top of one of them. It is a steep set of stairs but the view from the top is well worth it.
The area is unspoiled and beautiful. A picnic near the ruins for lunch and a walking tour of the area is a great way to spend the day.
