Treasure Hunting in North Carolina

Category: Cool Stuff, North Carolina, United States

As mentioned in a previous post about Asheville, one thing you can do while on vacation is go gem mining.  In different areas of the world, you will find many different gemstones.  Some mines are open to the public, where for a small fee you can dig for your own gems.  One mine that’s open to the public is Gem Mountain, located in Spruce Pine, which isn’t too far from Asheville.  Here you pay to get buckets of dirt, and then whatever you find in them is yours.  They even have people who will take a look at what you find to see if it’s worth anything.  You can even get your finds made into jewelry!  I know not everyone will think this is a fun thing to do on vacation, but for others, it can be a great activity, and a time to try something new.
