A cool Alaskan experience

Alaska is the largest state in the US covering 570,373 square miles of land and 45,000 square miles of water. With this geographical profile, there is much to do in this destination, which can make it an amazing honeymoon adventure for you and your new spouse. Among the activities that this state has to offer, there are a few that can only be done and seen in Alaska. If you plan a trip to this magnificent place, should consider the following attractions. Catch romance and adventure along the way and enjoy Alaska!

Aurora Borealis - The Northern Lights

These are colorful pink, green, blue, red tinged curtain of swirling waving lights seen in the sky due to the solid particles that come in contact and splash with the magnetic field of the earth. It is present the whole year but can only be visible when the night sky is dark enough during late August through early April. If you are looking for some romance on your honeymoon, what could be more romantic than watching the Aurora Borealis with your loved one, knowing how few people ever get to see it?

There are winter packages available in the hotels and lodges near Fairbanks that might increase the chances of travelers to catch a glimpse of the aurora. It is definitely a sight to behold. Consider yourself lucky if you are fortunate to experience its beauty. The quest to see the aurora is in itself an adventure.

Gold Panning

During the summer, you can look for gold flakes and nuggets in the streams and hills of Alaska. It takes a little work though and do not expect it to float at your feet. You pan for gold using your eyes and hands. You can do this for free at public sites and there are also places that charge you for gold panning.

Just bear in mind that the gold does not glitter but it gleams. So while in search in muck, keep your eyes open and watch the gleam. There are many different locations you can go panning for gold, so you don’t need to worry about being in the one or two places in the state that will have gold.  You might even be lucky and come across with a nugget that can be molded into a ring, which can be given to a loved one.

Fishing

Catch five different Pacific types of Salmon, humongous halibuts, large rainbow trout or one of the many other types of fish that the Alaskan waters have to offer. If fishing is your interest, this experience will be very fulfilling.

See Alaska from the sky

With the scarcity of roads and abundance of the country, it is just logical to view the sights form the air. Enjoy views of landscapes and glaciers while on board an aircraft that can even land on the glaciers itself. The destinations where this is popular are the Denali National Park, the Northern Inside Passage (Juneau, Haines, Skagway), Prince William Sound and its glaciers; Kenai Peninsula and the bear infested western Cool Inlet. The airports that are catered for this can be reached by most cruise ships, railroads or even by rental car.

Cruising

Enjoy the history and romantic scenery of Alaska and have a glimpse of the wildlife in bears, bald eagles and whales. Weeklong cruises offer two types of the Alaskan cruise. Round trip passengers usually run the whole length of the Inside Passage, the southeast or panhandle, from Seattle, Washington or Vancouver, British Columbia. One-way passengers travel to Seward or Whittier, Alaska from Seattle or Vancouver. Upon reaching land they ride a bus or car fly back home from Anchorage or Fairbanks. Daylong cruises in Juneau, Whittier and Seward offer the sight of the glaciers and view the everyday lives of the wildlife such as bears, sea lions, sea otters and eagles.

Railroad

Alaska has two operational railway services. You can view the breathtaking sites of the state on board the two trains such as the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet. The Alaska Railroad is a state owned railway that serves summer sightseers via its two routes; one from Seward to Anchorage, and one from Anchorage, Denali to Fairbanks. It serves weekend service from Anchorage to Fairbanks during the winter.

The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway is based in Skagway and is known for being the excursion of passengers of cruise ships. This allows reliving the historic route trip taken by the people during the Klondike gold rush in the late 1890s by crossing to Canada and then back to Skagway two to three times a day during the peak season of cruise ships.

Denali National Park

Spanning over six million acres of land, Denali National Park and Preserve is one of the biggest and safest areas allowing honeymooners enjoy the beauty of nature and wildlife in a romantic setting. It is also home to the tallest mountain in the United States, Mount McKinley. If you want an unforgettable honeymoon while communing with nature, Denali National Park is definitely the place to visit.

There are countless trails that you can take in the park, all of which afford you priceless glimpses and distant but real encounters with the diverse animal species of Denali National Park. And of course don’t forget to take the time to smell the roses, figuratively speaking, because the park’s flora and fauna is one of the most beautiful sights in the state.

There are many things to do in Alaska.  If you’re looking for some adventure, you can have an amazing honeymoon in Alaska.
