San Antonio’s sights, scenes and strength

San Antonio is well known for many different things.  One of course, is the Alamo, and another is that it is the home of the National Basketball Association team, the San Antonio Spurs.  San Antonio also has a lot more to offer.  It is a destination that is full of tradition and rich history.  San Antonio is one of the more popular tourist destinations in the state of Texas.

Exploring San Antonio is not exactly a piece of cake, as it is the second-biggest city in Texas, which in turn is the second largest state in the United States. The city had a population of at least 1.2 million but surged to 1.9 million in 2006 making it the nation’s 29th-biggest metropolitan area. San Antonio stretches over 400 square miles in the northern part of South Texas within the American Southwest. 

A city with that is also known for its deep religious roots, San Antonio was named after Saint Anthony of Padua of Portugal, who led an expedition from Spain in 1691. San Antonio is also a military-oriented area with several bases residing in it including, Lackland Air Force Base, Fort Sam Houston, Brooks City-Base, Camp Stanly and Camp Bullis. Another significant facility in San Antonio is the South Texas Medical Center, which is the biggest and lone medical research center in South Texas.

When you want to visit the culture of San Antonio, the right places to go in order to become familiar is the Alamo, Tejano and River Walk. For those that are geared towards having a good time, San Antonio has both Six Flags Fiesta and SeaWorld Texas theme parks, which are known to attract 20 million tourists annually. Museum buffs can also have their fill by visiting the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in Texas.

The Alamo

Formally knows as the San Antonio de Valleo Mission, the Alamo is currently standing as a museum in San Antonio Texas but previously served as a fortress and mission compound. Alamo in Spanish means cottonwood trees.

The Alamo was constructed by in the 18th century by the Spanish Empire to serve as an education facility for Native Americans who were converted to Christianity. The Alamo then served as a fortress in the next century and was the focal point of many military uprisings including the popular Battle of the Alamo in 1986 in a bloody battle occurred between Mexico and the Republic of Texas during the time of the Texas Revolution.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas

If you’re in San Antonio and itching for excitement then Six Flags Fiesta is the perfect place for you. The theme park is one of the area’s biggest attractions, as it sprawls over 200 acres and is located in the San Antonio’s northwest.

Six Flags Fiesta’s is more than just thrill rides, as it also features the White Water Bay Water Park and music shows that are very popular especially to kids. The park has several themed areas namely Crackaxle, Los Festivales, Spassburg, Fiesta Bay Boardwalk and Rockville.

Six Flags Fiesta has been a key role in San Antonio, as it will serve as one of the top entertainment facilities under the planned development of the area being led by USAA’s  La Cantera.  Six Flags Fiesta’s western area includes the resort zone, where is home to the Westin La Cantera, two championship golf courses, and resort specials. The southern portion includes several residential and commercial projects such as a large shopping center, The Shops at La Cantera and an entertainment complex. The northern portion of Six Flags Fiesta has the North Rim commercial development.

SeaWorld Texas

If you want to have an underwater experience in sunny San Antonio then SeaWorld will fill your need. SeaWorld is located in the Hills area of San Antonio and sprawls across 250 acres of marine life. SeaWorld San Antonio is under the Busch Entertainment Corporation’s SeaWorld chain.

What makes SeaWorld San Antonio unique from other theme parks is that it stands as the biggest marine-life them park in the world and is sanctioned by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums.
