Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park is the oldest established National Park in the world. It covers 3,468 square miles in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. The park is home to over 10,000 hot springs and geysers, more than half of all geysers on the planet. The most famous geyser is Old Faithful, faithfully erupting every 65 to 92 minutes. An eruption can shoot 3,700–8,400 gallons of boiling water. The tallest and largest geyser in the park is actually Steamboat Geyser which is less predictable than famous Old Faithful.
At the North entrance of the park in Montana is the Roosevelt Arch, whose cornerstone was laid by Theodore Roosevelt. There are 11 places to stay within the park's boundaries from cabin to hotel accomodations. The Old Faithful Inn even has a clear view of Old Faithful Geyser. There are also 11 campgrounds and a recreational park. Many parts of the park are closed during the winter and the best time to go is between May and October.
The park is on a plateau about 8000 feet above sea level on average, most of which is a very large caldera which has been nearly filled-in with volcanic debris. Yellowstone has registered three major volcanic eruption events in the last 2.2 million years with the last event occurring 640,000 years ago. Its eruptions are the largest known to have occurred on Earth within that timeframe, producing drastic climate change in the aftermath. The underground volcanic activity is what heats the springs and powers the geysers in the park.
There are many things to do and see inside this huge park. There are many natural wonders like geysers, hot springs, canyons, forests, and wildlife to see. You can go hiking, fishing, kayaking, backpacking or mountaineering.
Natural wonders to see:
The Upper Geyser Basin in the Norris Area is home to the most famous of them all, Old Faithful. There are about 150 geysers in this section of the park. Of all the geysers in the park only 5 are on a predicatble schedule: Castle, Grand, Daisy, Riverside, and Old Faithful.
The Lower Geyser Basin holds the largest geyser, Great Fountain. It erupts twice a day but usually within a 4 hour window. You can also view other activity in the are by foot along a boardwalk trail at Fountain Paint Pots and by car on Firehole Lake Drive.
Just south of Old Faithful are the Kepler Cascades. This is a beautiful 125 foot waterfall you can see just a short walk from your car. There are other waterfalls such as Mystic Falls and Fairy Falls as well.
The Mammoth Area of the park is home to the Mammoth Hot Springs. Also in the area are Gardner River and Gardner River Canyon. In this area is the "Boiling River" where you can walk upstream about a half mile and bathe in hot water.
These are just some of the things to see in the park. There are many other things to see in other areas of the park. You can have a great adventure with the family in this beautiful landscape.
