Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, about 36 miles south of Cancun. It is a wonderful area for water activities such as swimming and scuba diving. It has become a popular resort and cruise destination for many vacationers.
Cozumel is known for its great areas to scuba dive. There are beautiful coral reefs that are protected from the open ocean by the island's natural geography. For this reason it is usually mentioned as one of the best locations to scuba dive in the world.
The island is extremely flat and made of mostly limestone. The highest natural point on the island is less than 15 meters above sea level. There are deep water filled sinkholes formed by water flowing through the limestone called cenotes. You can explore some of them by snorkeling, swimming or diving.
For a little adventure, you should definitely see the ruins of San Gervasio. This is an ancient Mayan city located approximately at the center of the island. There are numerous buildings for you to discover. One of the most interesting buildings is the Temple of the Hands. Inside there are many small red hand prints painted on the wall that archaeologists are unable to determine their significance.
You can always do day trips off the island to other Mayan ruins like Tulum or Chichen Itza. There are also wonderful places to relax and have fun like at Xcarat or Playa Del Carmen. You can have a great time in Cozumel and enjoy the wonderful Caribbean.
